Career Notes: Josh Brooks made the most of his college career at LSU where he started out as a student equipment manager. While working as a student manager, Mr. Brooks became a student assistant coach under Jimbo Fisher. After his graduation in 2002, Brooks obtained a graduate assistant coaching position with the University of Louisiana-Monroe. He was then promoted to Director of Football Operations in 2004. During his tenure at ULM they became bowl eligible for the first time in the school's history. In 2008 Josh accepted a job at the University of Georgia. He has worked his way from being the Assistant Director of Football Operations to now serving as the Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations. In this role Brooks is in charge of scheduling future football games as well as coordinating team travel. His responsibilities also include assisting with the development and management of facilities and new construction projects for the athletic association.
Mr. Brooks took the time to answer a few questions for us:
1)What advice do you have for current and future student managers?
Enjoy the moment. Your college years will be over before you know it. Don't be so focused on your next goal or graduating that you forget to enjoy the present.
2) How has being a student manger helped you get to where you are today?
I owe everything I am in this profession to Jeff Boss (Former Equipment Manager at LSU). Jeff Boss was the hardest working, selfless, kindest and most genuine person I have ever known. The example he set for me is something I will strive for my entire life and will never come close. The lessons I learned as a student manager created the foundation of my work philosophy.
3) Do you have any particular advice for a student manger hoping to someday become a coach?
You have to start putting time in the film room now. Ask your coaches to allow you to sit in position meetings or any film sessions. Don't be afraid to ask! Ask the graduate assistants if there is something you can help out with after your normal work hours. Grad Assistants are always looking for more help. The first job they give you may be small but as you build up their trust they will give you more responsibility until one day you become a necessity!
To God Be The Glory!
